| Dianetics®: The Evolution of a Science was originally written as a book-length nonfiction feature for the May 1950 issue (June in England) of a leading science fiction magazine to which L. Ron Hubbard was a regular contributor. | First appearing on the newsstands in late April, the issue sold out in a few days. The feature received a startlingly immediate and wide response from scientists and engineers, as well as the general public – triggering an avalanche of more than 2,000 letters in the first two weeks. Almost all these letters contained interest in and orders for Mr. Hubbard's upcoming book on the subject, Dianetics®: The Modern Science of Mental Health, to be released that month. In September 1955, Dianetics®: The Evolution of a Science was published in the United States as a softcover book, with several terms revised for current usage. The book has since been reprinted many times and has been one of the most popular books on the subject. The latest edition has been upgraded, with an expanded glossary and many footnotes for speed in study, as well as a complete index for quickly finding the exact references or quotes desired.
